The updated ViriCiti functionality was developed in close collaboration with both Keolis’ management and drivers
Keolis Nederland provides public transport with over 2300 employees in Almere, Gelderland, Overijssel and Utrecht and on the heavy rail networks Zwolle-Enschede, Zwolle-Kampen and Zutphen-Hengelo-Oldenzaal. Keolis transports 45 million passengers annually with 700 buses and 25 trains. Keolis Nederland is a 100% subsidiary of the internationally operating mobility company Keolis, which provides public transport in 15 countries worldwide with 68.500 employees.
As part of their continued commitment to increase efficiency, safety and passenger comfort, Keolis Nederland started rolling out the new and improved Smart Driving solution from ViriCiti for about 1.000 drivers in the region of Utrecht and city of Almere, in December 2020.
As a world’s first, ViriCiti has developed an advanced statistical model that can now isolate and measure the actual impact a driver has on a trip, excluding the influence of external factors such as vehicle weight, weather conditions, or traffic. This was in line with Keolis’ focus on creating a transparent and fair system for their drivers.
Driver involvement from Day 1
Right from the beginning, Keolis knew that the adoption of the application from their bus drivers was highly important for a successful implementation of Smart Driving. Therefore, an extensive pilot program was kick-started in March 2020, during which the ViriCiti and Keolis management teams worked closely with bus drivers to incorporate their feedback into a product that is transparent, fair, and packed with useful insights, for both management and drivers.
Since the end of the pilot, drivers that took part in it have improved their driving skills and their score considerably. Furthermore, the drivers who participated in the pilot program have become internal ambassadors within the Keolis training and started advocating the new Smart Driving feature to the rest of their colleagues.
“By using Smart Driving we can create a positive working atmosphere with the keywords ‘motivation and coaching’. With this influence and stimulus we are convinced that our performance and craftsmanship will increase on a broader scale and multiple disciplines.”
– Chris Hogeveen, Keolis Concession Manager for Province Utrecht and Almere
Exciting new features
ViriCiti’s Smart Driving feature comes with a series of new functionalities.
The Eco Driving indicator shows to what degree drivers drive smoothly, and which improved their driving style the most. This is calculated taking into account only the influence of the driver on the trips; external factors are excluded.
The Events indicator tracks incidents like harsh braking events and shows trends in harsh braking, locations where particular events occur, as well as incident frequency per location, increasing transparency and allowing the identification of problematic areas.
The Efficiency insights allow the operator to improve its fuel efficiency by tracking periodically the consumption related to driver scoring and offer additional training to drivers who need it most.
ViriCiti’s Smart Driving feature is OEM-agnostic, suitable for electric and non-electric vehicles, and available for both EU- and US-based operators.
“Our research has shown that driver buy-in will be crucial in the adoption of a product such as Smart Driving. That’s why we have spent a lot of resources creating a system that measures the actual impact a driver has on a trip, and which excludes external factors. So, naturally, it is very rewarding to see that our final product is so well-received, not only within Keolis’s management team but also among the drivers.”
