ViriCiti optimizes the charging process for Dutch operator Qbuzz across 163 charger connectors, through which flows an average of 14.4 MWh per day *
Qbuzz is a public transport operator in the Netherlands active in Utrecht, Drenthe and Groningen. It was founded in 2008 and it currently has over 2100 employees. Its mixed fleet consists of 782 vehicles.
Due to their continuous efforts for more efficient and sustainable transport, their electric fleet increased considerably in the past years. More electric buses means more attention needs to be paid to the charging process in order to avoid high charging costs, power peaks and time-of-use energy tariffs.
This is why ViriCiti’s Smart Charging solution was chosen by the Dutch operator. In October 2020, ViriCiti started rolling out the largest Smart Charging implementation in the public transportation sector (potentially outside of China) for Qbuzz. In total, 163 charger connectors (plugin & pantograph) managed by Qbuzz are connected to the ViriCiti dashboard. Smart Charging is rolled out for Heliox and ABB chargers.
With ViriCiti’s Smart Charging solution, Qbuzz is able to manage chargers amounting to a total installed capacity of 24.04 MW, making use of advanced functionalities such as load balancing, scheduled load balancing, and remote start for preconditioning designed to reduce costs and improve charging efficiency.
The Smart Charging service helps Qbuzz manage the charging process of 164 electric buses operated in the Dutch provinces of Groningen and Drenthe.

Smart Charging helps decrease energy costs by up to 30%
ViriCiti’s Smart Charging service helps increase the efficiency of charging infrastructure and decrease energy costs by thousands of Euros / Dollars. Its intelligent algorithm provides accurate charging information and predicts the remaining range of e-buses. ViriCiti’s Smart Charging is interoperable as it integrates with multiple OEMs.
Through load balancing, Smart Charging eliminates infrastructure limitations by allowing users to set a maximum power per charger group, and control the charging speed of individual chargers. It also allows operators to reduce costs associated with demand charges, process also known as ‘peak shaving’. Scheduled load balancing allows to further reduce energy costs by making use of Day/Night energy tariffs, when applicable.
By avoiding exceeding the maximum grid capacity and by optimizing their charging schedule, operators could have a larger number of electric buses into operation than the existing charging infrastructure would otherwise allow.
